At present, the Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation makes grants in two categories, which are described below: (1) under the Bruno Walter Assistant Conductor Chair program and (2) under a general program in which the Foundation’s trustees award grants in support of organizations or individuals that have, or are participating in, programs that are consistent with the purposes for which the Foundation was formed and meet its strategic goals.

THE BRUNO WALTER ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR CHAIR PROGRAM

Each year the Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation intends to award one or more $10,000 grants to United States-based orchestras and / or opera companies in support of their assistant / associate conductor positions.  Each award will be split into two components, with $7,500 being granted to the institution and $2,500 to its assistant conductor.  Grants made to the assistant conductor are designed to help further his or her career by attendance at a conducting training session or another mentoring / career development program selected by the assistant conductor with the approval of the Foundation.  Each assistant conductor who receives an award under this program will hold the Bruno Walter Assistant Conductor Chair position during the performance season for which the award is granted.

The purpose of the grant is to assist emerging conductors in their career development by encouraging opera companies and orchestras to provide mentoring and hands-on learning opportunities. The Foundation encourages both large and small institutions to apply. In addition, these grants will help remind musicians and the general public of the invaluable contribution Maestro Walter made during his lifetime to opera, symphonic music, and the training of young conductors.

Application Requirements, Deadline and Announcement of Awards

Applications for each year’s grant program must be submitted in the manner and by the date set forth in that year’s solicitation materials.  The current application description is announced under the NEWS section of this website. Solicitation materials are distributed by mail by the Foundation to a large number of orchestras and opera companies in the United States.  To ensure the widest possible pool of grant applicants, each year’s solicitation materials are also posted on this web site for any organizations that do not otherwise receive copies.

Applications will be judged based on many factors, including, but not limited to: (a) the level of commitment of an orchestra or opera company, and its music director, to the mentoring and training of assistant conductors, with particular attention paid to any formalized training program in place; (b) the overall musical strength and ability of each assistant conductor candidate and his or her mentors; (c) the orchestra or opera company’s history and level of support and training for assistant conductors; and (d) the ways and extent to which an assistant conductor is utilized by the orchestra or opera company and is exposed, in a meaningful way, to the members of the orchestra and in public performances.  No one factor is determinative; the review panel will consider all aspects of an application.  Applications are sought from a wide range of orchestras and opera companies, both large and small, those with large budgets and extensive programming to those with limited budgets and short, narrowly focused programs.  However, as the grant program is focused on assisting emerging conductors, it is generally to be expected that those assistant conductors (and their organizations) who have held their position for five years or less will have the greatest likelihood of being granted an award.

GENERAL GRANT PROGRAM

The Foundation accepts unsolicited applications under a general program in which the Foundation’s trustees may award grants in support of organizations or individuals that operate, or are participating in, programs that are consistent with the purposes for which the Foundation was formed and meet its strategic goals.  Also, the Foundation may, from time to time, decide to support organizations or individuals that operate, or are participating in, programs that are consistent with the Foundation’s purposes and meet its strategic goals but have not submitted applications for grants. Prior to submitting the application, the organization must email info@brunowalter.org for approval to submit the application.
